Olin Correspondent The Top 4 Study Spots at Olin
Olin Correspondent: The Top 4 Study Spots at Olin by: Campus Correspondent, Marni Widen (Olin) on February 09, 2018 | 0 Comments Comments 363 Views February 9, 2018Being a student, a lot of your time is (or at least should be) spent studying. Luckily for Olin students, there are plenty of great spots to study, each with their own slightly different ââ¬Å"personality.â⬠Whether you want a social spot to talk to friends and occasionally glance at your readings, or a spot where breathing quietly is encouraged, WashU has the study spot for you. Here are four of Olin studentsââ¬â¢ favorite spotsâ⬠¦Kopolow Business Library, Simon HallThis library, located on the second floor of business building Simon Hall, is a great place to get done that 20-page case reading you have been putting off all weekend (a completely hypothetical example, of course). A quiet place with different types of seating (chairs, couches, benches) allows for all types of work to get done here from read ing to research. This library also gets quieter when you walk up to the third floor which has single-person cubicle-style desks interspersed between shelves of books for what I can only assume is top secret homework? One unique offering of this library is the Bloomberg terminals located in the back of library. Open to all Olin students, these terminals are a great way to uncover your inner stockbroker and practice typing in all those ticker symbols you know. Also available to students in the library are study rooms that can be reserved for group meetings, phone calls, or anyone who enjoys being surrounded by whiteboards. For me, no noise is more distracting than background noise, so I do not frequent this library as much as others ââ¬â but that also may be because I am a second semester seniorâ⬠¦ Bauer/Knight HallYes, I took this picture, and yes this is what it really looks like. These tables, surrounded by natural light from the open glass ceiling above, are frequented by all WashU students not just Olin students. Not pictured is a Starbucks and cafà © with made-to-order food, making this place even more popular. Empty tables are usually hard to come by (despite what this picture shows) as many people stake out early to grab their favorite table. Donââ¬â¢t want to set an alarm in the single digits? No problem, just reserve one of the many study rooms located on all three floors of Bauer and Knight Hall. These rooms, only able to be reserved by Olin students, vary in size, location and room temperature (good thing each room has its own thermostat!). Many of these rooms also house large screen monitors perfect for projecting size 6 font excel spreadsheets or that must share YouTube video. My favorite part about Bauer Hall is the natural lighting. It not only makes the space more photogenic (thanks, sun!), but also less harsh on your eyes when staring at a computer screen all day. However, it is important to note, if you need a quiet study spot, thi s is not the place for you. Bauer is always buzzing with conversations, the sound of espresso machines, and clicking keyboards. Only when itââ¬â¢s raining is all the noise drown out by the calming sound of raindrops hitting the glass ceiling above. BSBA Lounge, Simon HallThis list would not be complete if I didnââ¬â¢t mention the BSBA lounge located on the ground floor of Simon. This lounge, remodeled only a few years before I started at WashU, is probably (based on my gut feeling and zero research) the study spot with the highest concentration of business students. Whether it be group meetings, informal gatherings of students in business fraternities, or the stack of Wall Street Journals available to read, this space just screams business. The entrance is completely covered in glass making it easy to spot an open table or a friend you can say hi to (so you can sit at their table). The glass also opens up the space making Simon feel less like a Hall and more like an interconne cted space for work and learning. The way the BSBA lounge is laid out, the further back you walk the quieter the space gets making it perfect for all types of homework. The lounge also has large windows in the back allowing you to feel like you are outside enjoying the weather even if you are inside doing homework. It is also right across from another study spotâ⬠¦which leads me to the last place on this list.Einsteinââ¬â¢s, Simon HallThe final place on this list is where this blog post was born and where I spend a majority of my time doing work. The conveniently located seating around an Einstein Broââ¬â¢s bagel shop (that, sadly, does not accept meal points) is the perfect place to do work and not get dirty looks for unwrapping loud snacks like Clif bars or a bag of Sun Chips. With close proximity to food, a printer, bathrooms, and a water fountain, itââ¬â¢s easy to lose track of time and spend an entire day sitting at one of these tables. Also, its close proximity to the BSBA office means you are bound to run into an advisor or dean at least once while sitting here (which inevitably happened while writing this blog post).Often shortened to ââ¬Å"Steinsâ⬠over text, this place is a common meeting place for group meetings or quick chats in the ten minutes between classes. Since many business students go from class in Simon, to, well, class in Simon, Einsteinââ¬â¢s is always flooded with people chatting or trying to beat the clock and get a bagel and coffee before the clock strikes ten after. Those of you who have visited WashU and the Olin Business School would you agree with this list? Which of these spots would you frequent? Lets talk about it in the comments below!DONT MISS: OLIN CORRESPONDENT: MEMORABLE MOMENTS AT OLINà andà MEET THE PQU CAMPUS CORRESPONDENTS Page 1 of 11

How to Implement OnCreate Event for Delphi TFrame Object
TFrame is a container for components; it can be nested within forms or other frames. A frame, like a form, is a container for other components. Frames can be nested within forms or other frames, and they can be saved on the Component palette for easy reuse. Missing OnCreate Once you start using frames, youll note theres no OnCreate event you can use to initialize your frames. In short, the reason that a frame does not have a OnCreate event is there is no good time to fire the event. However, by overriding the Create method you can mimic the OnCreate event. After all, the OnCreate for Forms gets fired at the end of the Create constructor ââ¬â so overriding Create for Frames is as having the OnCreate event. Heres the source code of a simple frame exposing a public property and overriding the Create constructor: unit WebNavigatorUnit;interface uses à à Windows, Messages, SysUtils, Variants, Classes, à à Graphics, Controls, Forms, Dialogs, StdCtrls; type à à TWebNavigatorFrame class(TFrame)à à à à urlEdit: TEdit;à à private à à à à fURL: string;à à à à procedure SetURL(const Value: string) ;à à public à à à à constructor Create(AOwner: TComponent) ; override;à à published à à à à property URL : string read fURL write SetURL;à à end;implementation{$R *.dfm} constructor TWebNavigatorFrame.Create(AOwner: TComponent) ;begin à à inherited Create(AOwner) ;à //OnCreate code à à URL : http://delphi.about.com; end;procedure TWebNavigatorFrame.SetURL(const Value: string) ;begin à à fURL : Value; à à urlEdit.Text : Value; end;end. Adaptive and Technical Challenges
Question: ExplainAdaptive and Technical Challenges. Answer: Introduction Every organization having more than five to six employees needs an authority figure who can lead from within. It is crucial for people in authority to lead. They are required to give quick, decisive solutions to challenges. The adaptive challenges treated as technical challenges put pressure on the person in authority. Many challenges earlier have been adaptive challenges. However, gradually humanity has developed the knowledge to solve them. The problems to which the solutions are already present are Technical problems. Adaptive and Technical Challenges: According to Yukl and Mahsud, (2010) the main difference between technical and adaptive challenge is that a leader has to solve it without previous knowledge. Adaptive challenges require people to take charge because solutions are not available readily. The employees take responsibility for the problem and become part of the solution. Diagnoses of adaptive and technical challenges are different. According to the speaker Persistent Crisis is an indicator of an adaptive problem. Economic crisis is an example of a technical problem. They arise due to problems in regulation design in banking systems. To solve an adaptive challenge, one has to probe, diagnose and get to the root of the problem. The quickest way to solve an adaptive challenge is to learn new ways. Discovery and learning are necessary. The classic failure in leadership is the misjudgment of the diagnostic results and taking the wrong decision. The people in leadership should ask the right questions and the solutions should be provided by the collective intelligence of the people (Yukl and Mahsud, 2010). The technical challenges are easy to identify. People have the knowhow required to solve the problem. The solutions are normally easy, quick and decisive. The authority can solve the technical problems, or the organization can bring in an expert to solve the problem. Normally the problems arise within the organization. Due to the easy understanding of solutions to the technical problems, people in the organization are very receptive to these solutions. Implementation of solutions is quick and efficient because of the previous knowledge regarding the problem (Heifetz et al., 2009). Adaptive challenges, on the other hand, are difficult in identifying. Adaptive challenges are often confused with technical problems that happen to be a critical failure of leadership for a person in authority. Adaptive challenges need changes in people. The changes include a different approach to the problem, values, beliefs that can aid in solving the problem. Solving of the problem requires the participation of people. The authority cannot provide solutions readily. Adaptive problems often arise even outside the organizational boundaries. Solutions are complex thus are not readily understood by the employees. Adaptive problems require innovative solutions. The formulation of new solutions is time dependent. Thus, implementation of these solutions is a long drawn process (Heifetz et al., 2014). Adaptive leadership According to Heifetz et al., (2014) Ronald Heifetz made the leadership model called adaptive leadership. This method of leadership involves changes in the behavior of the person in authority and the employees in an organization according to the situation presented. The diagnosis of the problem by leaders should be accurate and the leaders should change their behavior accordingly. A person in authority should be flexible and agile. To deal with adaptive challenges versatility in thinking process is required. The speaker focused on the issue of flexibility, which is important for a person in authority to switch between different positions that are required to solve an unseen problem (Heifetz Linsky, 2002). It is a very active form of leadership, which requires a hands-on approach to solving problems arising in an organization (Adams et al., 2013). Diagnosing Adaptive Challenges: Adaptive problems have a difficult identifying process; many times they are mistaken for a technical problem. Due to this, the problem persists. Adaptive leadership requires the person to think in a different way than routine operations. Adaptive solutions require the leader to make decisions about the conservation of past practices, discarding of out of date practices, and inventing new ways as well as retaining the old ways. According to Heifetz Laurie (2001) Failure to take human aspects of adaptive challenges into the diagnosis, like cultural, political dimensions is a cause of low implementation rates. Separation of the technical elements from the adaptive aspect requires creativity of the leaders. They require listening to people for clues and advice to solve an adaptive problem (Adams et al., 2013). Conclusion According to the speaker, Ronald Heifetzs adaptive leadership is based on value-added outcomes. The jobs of leaders have broad-based descriptions that allow versatility and flexibility in decision making. People are expected to cover for one another. Making contacts and networks with people in the same field is encouraged for getting ideas. Leaders have to motivate the people for a Can do attitude. Success depends on group cohesion Essay Example
Success depends on group cohesion Paper Starting with the basics, an efficient and effective sports team is a collection of two or more athletes who have a common identity, set of goals, objectives and fate. Its members show structured patterns of interaction and styles of communicating. They view the structure of the team in the same ways. There is a mutual reliance upon one another to be connected personally and perform their skills. In other words, the team is a source of mutual benefit for the members. The athletes of a team need to be attracted to each other and think of themselves as a part of a we that differentiates them from they. The definition of cohesion `a dynamic process that is reflected in the tendency of a group to stick together and remain united in the pursuit of its instrumental objectives and/or for the satisfaction of member affective needs (Carron et al., 1998, p. 213) Group cohesion is a set of forces acting on members of a group, this tends to keep them within the group. Involves resistance to group disruption, commitment to group goals and individual responsibility for the achievement of goals.à Factors in developing a teamà concept and cohesiveness Situational Factors. Players in Close Proximity to each other will tend to bond together. Team changing rooms, residences, and shared means of transportation increase interaction. A team becomes more distinctive when it is identifiable in such as a uniform, mottoes, initiations and privileges. Even though the actual season lasts a few months, a team that practices all year will become more united. The Size of a team has significant impact on unity. Task cohesiveness decreased with increase in size. Similarity in commitments, ability, attitudes and goals are all associated with team unity. However, the most important factor in the development of cohesiveness is individual satisfaction. Recognition from others (parents, team mates, coaches and the public), improvement of skills, affiliation, and quality of the competition are components of this factor.à Leadership Factors. A way in which cohesiveness may backfire is when a new coach is brought in. One of the effects of high cohesion is that there is an over estimation of members contribution to success. Non-members are considered to be irrelevant to achieving team goals.à This is likely when a popular and successful coach has been replaced. It is one of the main reasons why successful football, rugby and hockey teams tend to hire assistants as head coaches. A good example of this is the Liverpool boot room Roy Evans was the last example of this. They are part of the organizations history already. Sometimes outside hiring results in the need to replace talented players who have been with the team for a long time. Compatibility between team mates and the coach is a vital factor in team cohesiveness. Lastly, the more the coach allows his players to participate in decision-making, the greater the team will become united.à Team Factors. When you put the same people in a close geographic location over a significant period of time, a group is formed that has five significant components (roles, norms, stability, goals and rewards and communication). These parts become contributors to the success or failure of a group in meeting goals. This is as true for a sports team as another other type of group. As a result of on-going interactions that take place among team members, Informal Roles evolve (team leader, enforcer, team clown, etc) examples of all of these are such as Roy Keane, Tony Adams, Paul Gascoigne respectively. If, for a period of time, someone who has played even an informal role, leaves the team, the management may have to hire a new player to fill the informal role. A teams effectiveness is high when the players understand their roles (Role Clarity), accept their roles (Role Acceptance) and try to perform the roles to the best of their ability (Role Performance). A coach can improve role clarity, acceptance and performance by making the behaviour requirements explicit, minimize the status difference between roles, and create an effective goal-setting program. The impact of an effective goal-setting program is to direct the players attention and behaviour, provide motivation to develop strategies for goal achievement, increase interest and prolong activity. The presence of Norms is also associated with increased cohesiveness. Norms signal a teams feelings about behaviours that are acceptable. When a new member comes to a team, it is the manager/player interaction norms that are confronted first. As cohesion increases so does conformity to the groups standards of behaviour. If a player ignores norms, punishments are given. This is true even when a player performs above the standard expected. The teams productivity norm is a key factor in the relationship between cohesion and productivity. When cohesion is low and there is a high norm for productivity, that team will outperform teams with a low norm. If team cohesion is high and norm for productivity is low, the performance level will be low. And finally, if a teams cohesion is high and the norm for productivity is high, performance will be high. A norm that has been established on a team will last for at least four generations after the original players have left. This is an indication of the stability of a teams norms. A problem exists when a manager takes over a team that has developed negative norms. Examples of such norms include abusive behaviour toward officials or other team members, a lack of commitment to team practices, and a focus on individual verse team goals. In such cases, the manager would have to enlist the formal and informal leaders to create a positive norm. Should these leaders not cooperate, the organization might need to replace personnel. The modern day sports world offers much recognition and rewards to individual players. It makes the coachs job of creating team unity more difficult. By emphasizing the groups goals and objectives over a single players, the manager will create greater group cohesion.à As a team reaches higher levels of cohesion, communication also increases. On the other side of the same coin, the more task and social communications occur, the greater the sense of team cohesion is produced.

Other differences between ethics and morals include (Resick et al., 2013); ethics come from social systems, which are external to an individual, whereas morals are regarded as intrinsic human factors that define govern behavior. Ethics are observed because society approves of them while morals exist because individuals believe in actions either being right or wrong. Ethics tend to be uniform in a particular society with minimal variations in defining them while morals are quite flexible as they can change with individual pattern of beliefs and values. Are Real Estate Appraisers To Blame For The Recent Real Estate Crisis Research Paper
Are Real Estate Appraisers To Blame For The Recent Real Estate Crisis In America - Research Paper Example An immediate caveat to saying that one segment of controls and regulations is responsible for a systemic crisis that affected not only a market but also the entire world is that this responsibility is not all encompassing. The definition of systemic is derived from the word ââ¬Å"system,â⬠which refers to several (more than one) distinct parts. Thus, to assign all blame to one part of the system implies that one part of the system was actually capable of creating a crisis. This assumption, along with the assumption that real estate appraisers were solely responsible for the crisis, are false; however, the issue of whether they played a significant role in the market failure is an important one to consider not only for historical purposes, but also for the purposes of policy and economic reform. From the literature since 2008, it is the finding of most experts that real estate appraisers contributed in large part (but not wholly) to the real estate crisis, due primarily to the d ecentralization of regulatory responsibility. The first component of assigning blame to any individual or group is to understand the role that they played in the system. According to scholars in the field of corporate accounting, significant portions of blame belong to all of the key players (and their respective roles) in the economic collapse.1 For instance, if it were not for homebuyers and their willingness to take out mortgages that they could not repay, there would have been no mortgage defaults for the financial markets to feed on. These authors also give blame to the issuers of credit default swaps, which were sold to investors as a significant source of income. These swaps, however, began to lose value rapidly when housing prices began to slide. In the middle of these two parts of the system were the mortgage originators, who typically received fees up front and accordingly had little incentive to make sure borrowers did not default on their loans. A piece of this part were the real estate appraisers, who likewise had no incentive to appraise homes for prices lower than a minimum price needed for a mortgage to be approved. If a real estate appraiser was thoroughly honest in all of its dealings, and it blocked too many transactions, there would be no demand for its services from partners. This element of marketplace competition and an incentive against honesty does not earn real estate appraisers any support among those looking for a major source of responsibility for the real estate crisis. However, certainly real estate appraisers did not complete their work in a vacuum: it was part of a process (a market process) that led to incentives for certain actions and outcomes over others. Consequently, the notion of assigning blame should extend beyond the circumstances that appraisers found themselves in. One way of doing this is identifying carelessness and negligence in the way in which they carried out their work. One example of this is how real estate appraisers have been accused of actively colluding to raise home prices artificially, which would encourage homeowners to continue to build home equity. Appraisals would occur on ââ¬Å"cursory drive-by inspections and comparisons with nearby homes that had recently been sold or refinanced.â⬠2 These comparisons were done on occasion to homes these same appraisers had valuated months before. EMR Conclusion Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
EMR Conclusion - Essay Example At the pre-implementation stage, a plan of action was set with specific dates by which time specific goals must be achieved. To a very large extent, this was a good step in setting the scope of the system to know what the limits of it are and finding ways to making up for the limitations (Thompson and Thompson, 2008). The fact that a recap session was also developed at the post-implementation stage to ensure that end users and practice leadership discussed key aspects of the go-live system were also a step in the right direction. This is because Davis and Wallbridge (2008) stressed the need for there to be periodic and constant evaluation and monitoring of health information systems (HIS) in ensuring that they are functioning according to levels that have been set for them from the onset. As West Palm has fulfilled all of these processes and steps effectively, it can be concluded that the facility is not in a position to gain competitive advantage of the system, especially if it woul d continue to train its human resource to be on top of the use of the system to improve efficiency and

WorldCom Essay Example for Free
WorldCom Essay This paper explores the Accounting fraud that took place at WorldCom. Three aspects of the corporate culture are discussed including WorldComââ¬â¢s harsh top-down management approach, the lack of written rules or a code of conduct, and the inaccessibility of many of WorldComââ¬â¢s departments. The CEOââ¬â¢s desire to be the #1 stock on Wall Street is also discussed. WorldComââ¬â¢s inappropriate booking and releasing of accruals is explored and proper accrual accounting procedures are stated. Three aspects of whistleblowing are discussed, including saving a company from a destructive end, facing public reprisal, and potential legal effects. Arthur Andersen is then used to explore the credibility of the Accounting profession when corporate fraud is unveiled. Keywords: WorldCom, fraud, accruals, whistleblowing WorldCom The corporate culture at WorldCom was one that was very loose. Although several factors contributed to the loose and unhealthy environment at WorldCom, one of the greatest downfalls of the corporate culture was the harsh top-down management approach. Employees were advised to do as they were told without questioning management. In addition, CEO Bernard Ebbers and CFO Scott Sullivan dabbled in too many affairs that should have been handled by lower-level management. Too often they ordered overrides of basic procedures that resulted in the downfall of WorldCom. Orders were issued that resulted in the override of accounting procedures. This greatly contributed to the fraud. Another factor that contributed to the unhealthy corporate culture at WorldCom was the fact that no written rules or code of conduct existed. The CEO himself thought it was a waste of time. This paired with the harsh top-down management approach seemed to create a lack of internal control as well. There were no real company rules and managers were completely capable of overriding any rules that may have existed. The inaccessibility of other departments may have contributed to the fraud as well. With so many corporate headquarters, key personnel who may have detected the fraud sooner were not able to confirm that anything wrong was taking place. If a key manager from the finance department in Mississippi, a key manager from the human resources department in Florida, a key manager from the legal department in Washington, D. C. , and a key manager from the network operations department in Texas been together at any point in time, worked together in the same building, or even had the appropriate means to communicate (cell phones were not a hot commodity like they are today and e-mail was just starting to take flight), it is possible that WorldCom could have been saved from its fraudulent end. The CEOââ¬â¢s desire to be the #1 stock on Wall Street was the main source of the fraud. He was so driven to be on top that he ordered managers to engage in inappropriate accounting procedures that included maintaining a certain expense-to-revenue ratio at all costs, releasing accruals, and capitalizing expenses. Furthermore, his top leadership instructed employees about what information could and could not be disclosed with the external auditors. Employees were cursed and threatened if they disclosed anything that was perceived to be a threat to his plan of being the #1 stock on Wall Street. According to Beresford, Katzenbach, and Rogers, Jr. 2003), ââ¬Å"WorldCom manipulated the process of adjusting accruals in three ways. First, in some cases accruals were released without any apparent analysis of whether the Company actually had excess accruals in its accounts. Thus, reported line costs were reduced (and pre-tax income increased) without any proper basis. Second, even when WorldCom had excess accruals, the Company often did not release them in the period in which they were identified. Instead, certain line cost accruals were kept as rainy day funds and released to improve reported results when managers felt they were needed. Third, WorldCom reduced reported line costs by releasing accruals that had been established for other purposesââ¬â in violation of the accounting principle that reserves created for one expense type cannot be used to offset another expenseâ⬠(p. 69). According to Investopedia, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦economic events are recognized by matching revenues to expenses (the matching principle) at the time in which the transaction occurs rather than when payment is made (or received)â⬠(para. 1). Thus, accruals are booked when transactions occur. Accruals are released when either payment is made or when they are evaluated and deemed to be in excess of the actual accrual. Accruals of one type should never be released to offset another type. Accruals should also be released in the period they are identified. While whistleblowing may seem like a relatively easy concept to some, it really is not. The decision between doing the easy thing and doing the right thing usually is not easy. For instance, a person could report fraudulent activity that is taking place within an organization, whether it is due to corruption, misappropriation of assets, financial statement fraud, or another type of fraud. However, such a decision could carry a great price tag. Not only could it lead to the complete destruction of a company, but it could cost other employees their benefits, their retirements, and their jobs. One of the pros of whistleblowing is the fact that a company could be saved from certain destruction, as in the case of WorldCom. It is possible that the sooner fraudulent activity is reported, the less negative the outcome could be. However, whistleblowers are often perceived as tattle tales and snitches and sometimes face public reprisal, as was the case with WorldComââ¬â¢s Cynthia Cooper. Another downside is the potential legal effects of whistleblowing. According to Wikipedia, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦most whistleblower protection laws provide for limited make whole remedies or damages for employment losses if whistleblower retaliation is proven. However, many whistleblowers report there exists a widespread shoot the messenger mentality by corporations or government agencies accused of misconduct and in some cases whistleblowers have been subjected to criminal prosecution in reprisal for reporting wrongdoingâ⬠(Common Reactions section, 4). The consequences of whistleblowing may prove to be steep. The credibility of the Accounting profession is put in jeopardy when corporate fraud is unveiled. As a result of the WorldCom fraud, Arthur Andersen was ordered to cease practicing before the Security and Exchange Commission by August 31, 2002. According to Wikipedia, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦the damage to the Andersen name was so severe that as of 2010[update], it has not returned as a viable business even on a limited scale. There are over 100 civil suits pending against the firm related to its audits of Enron and other companies. In addition, its reputation was so badly tarnished that no company wanted Andersens name on an audit. Even before voluntarily surrendering its right to practice before the SEC, it had many of its state licenses revokedâ⬠(Demise section, 1). As stated by Charles Niemeier (2001), ââ¬Å"A loss of confidence can cause even a company with solid core operations to fail. That is because the negative impact of a lack of credibility can be far greater than the sum of the misstatements in the financialsâ⬠(The Dangers of Smoothing section, 7). Vitamins Facts :: essays research papers
VITAMINS Vitamins, a group of organic substances required in our diets in small amounts for growth and nutrition, are usually found in foodstuffs or taken as supplements. Yet vitamins probably present a wider gap between myth and reality in the layman's understanding than almost any other area of our diet. Surveys have found that while a majority of Americans do take vitamin supplements on a regular or occasional basis for reason of health concerns, there exists enormous confusion about the actual purpose and benefits of this practice ("Use of Vitamin and Mineral Supplements in the United States," 1990:161). Most people have a recognition that Vitamin C prevents scurvy, that Vitamin A is found in fish-liver oils, or that Vitamin D is found in dairy products; many people believe that Vitamin E preserves youth and prevents sterility, or that Vitamin C can present colds and cancer. Beyond this, however, there is still considerable ignorance and widespread myth. The reality behind the common practice of taking vitamin supplements is less dramatic, although vitamins do represent an important component of the necessary human diet. The word vitamin was formed from the Latin word for life, "vita," and the Greek word "amine", because 19th century scientists believed that they were formed only from amino acids. Amino acids are the twenty essential code elements which arrange themselves in varied sequences or chains to form complex proteins, the basic foodstuff of life. These organic acids (containing the essential ingredient NH2), in conjunction with the nucleic acids (DNA material being composed of the four bases adenine, guanine thymine and cytosine), "translate" the genetic instructions from the DNA of the chromosome to the RNA transcript, and in turn transfer these instructions from the transcript to proteins. If proteins are the building blocks of life, then amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. Plant cells form amino acids from the compounds which the plant draws up from the ground, such as the nitrates and ammonia salts. Animals, however, cannot perform this conversion of simple inorganic substances to amino acids, so they must ingest them in the form of food-- with herbivorous animals consuming plant proteins in vegetables and carnivorous animals consuming animal proteins in the bodies of their prey. Vitamins are essential aids in many body processes, converting food the energy, building and maintaining cells, and other functions. Vitamins can thus be looked at as a crucial ingredient in a the long-term maintenance of health.

The Power of Knowledge
The Power of Knowledge Our present day cabinet of curiosities (the ââ¬Å"Cabinetâ⬠) is akin to early modern representations, which contained a vast range of objects representing the power of divine creation, in that the Cabinet represents, through its display of five objects, the power of human knowledge. Each of these objects helps mankind acquire and/or use knowledge. The order of objects displayed has been designed to reflect the evolution and utilisation of knowledge: an illustration of the DNA spiral helix (the building blocks of life); seed samples (the growth and development of organisms); the electron icroscope (allowing detailed examination of objects); the tablet-style computer (the dissemination and democratisation of knowledge); and the moon rock (exploration of space). DNA Spiral Helix The deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) helix is the only object in the Cabinet which is a representation.Whilst DNA exists in every cell it would need the Electron Microscope to render DNA v isible. Two strands are shown twisted into a helix with rods between the strands. How does this represent DNA? Phillip Cohen (2006) describes the helix thus: Each strand spells out the genetic code as a chain of four chemical letters alled bases: adenine (A), thymine (T), cytosine (C) and guanine (G). A,C,G and T sit on the rods between the two strands which are made from a sugar molecule and a phosphate molecule (Genetics Home Reference, 2013).The discovery of DNA and the evolving knowledge of it, has proved immensely powerful because of what it enables us to do, for example: to detect a criminal's guilt from a single hair beyond reasonable doubt; detect family connections by comparing DNA from two or more people, dead or alive; (hence the certainty that it was Richard Ill's remains found in Leicester); and to give the power to cure or eliminate previously incurable diseases, through the mapping of the human genome.Seed Samples Seed samples appear on the shelves at the seed bank of The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre, labelled in see-through closed plastic containers. The first seed bank was established by N. Vavilov in 1926 outside St. Petersburg, for scientific research and cross-breeding purposes (BBC, 2013). Since then the world has changed dramatically, resulting in an increased consumption of natural resources. Seed banks around the world have assumed a new and very important ole in the preservation of rare and dying species of all kinds of plant forms.Today the Millennium Seed Bank in Kew Royal Botanic Gardens is working on the ââ¬ËNoah's ark project and has acquired ten percent of the world's plant species threatened by climate change and the expansion of human habitats (Kew, nd). Seed samples preserved by seed banks provide not Just the opportunity for detailed study but also the power, opportunity and possibility for future generations to preserve most of the plant forms in the world (as we know it now) and to regenerate species to help feed the growing world population. An Electron Microscope This electron microscope is linked to three computer screens, showing typhoid bacteria in pink.Invented in 1 by German natural philosophers Max Knoll and Ernst Ruska, the electron microscope, though cumbersome and expensive is ââ¬Å"capable of high magnification and greater resolving power than a light microscopeâ⬠Oohn Innes Centre, 2013). Its capability to magnify finer details by two million times, revolutionised the studies of the behaviour and treatment of light resistant bacteria (such as typhoid bacteria) and viruses and enables detailed forensic analysis to take place. This object symbolises man's quest not only to understand his natural environment, but his ambition to control and manage it.The micrographs are artefacts in their own right; they can be displayed on their own as scientific evidence. The electron microscope can be displayed alone in a science museum, as a demonstration model for public use or in the Cabinet with the other four items chosen, to show the prominence and ever-increasing possibilities of technology and science and to illustrate man's evolving knowledge. A Tablet Computer Tablet-style computers combine several electronic components, such as a computer, amera and hand-held gaming device, into one convenient portable package (Martin, 2013) which is affordable for many consumers. The invention of the personal computer allowed individuals to access academic libraries and newspapers/ magazines via the internet (Slaughter, 2010) and (eventually) to communicate with other users, subject to a web connection. A tablet computer allows access to a wealth of information. A search engine acts as a filter to any subject; this enables appropriate content to be accessed. The rising popularity of internet-enabled phones, results in thousands more opportunities to access and create data being pened up. This technology enables knowledge to be shared and democratised ââ¬â no longer resting with a narrow elite (Slaughter, 2010).The tablet computer incorporates a camera to allow for the quick transfer of photographs and videos around the world. The camera can challenge and record human behaviours: this ability to provide a contemporaneous record of human behaviour has resulted in the power of Governments to dictate the historical record of events being publicly challenged. Early computers also helped plot the course to the moon of the Apollo 11 flights in 1969. (Taylor, 2013). A Piece of Rock from the Moon Moon rocks are of various shapes and sizes and ââ¬Å"range in age from about 3. billion years up to about 4. 5 billion years oldâ⬠(Museumwales, 2009). A wealth of previously unknown knowledge has been gained from studying these rocks, they have ââ¬Å"been of great value in advancing our understanding of the Moon and the history of our solar systemâ⬠(Astro. washington, 2009). Scientists believe that earth rocks and moon rocks were once e ither part of the same body or were originally combined before they were formed (Natural history museum, nd). On religious grounds, this could challenge raditional views on God's formation of the earth.Moon rocks can be exhibited on their own as artworks ââ¬â as natural art that reflect the universe in a microcosmic form in accordance with the Chinese tradition of the Philosopher Stones (BBC News, 2012). Moon rocks are priceless due to their scarcity, given the high cost of returning to the Moon to obtain more. In conclusion, the Cabinet symbolises the startling possibilities of human potential and the evolution of knowledge. The discovery of DNA and the creation of the Electron Microscope enabled, in their turn, turtner discoveries and developments to ake place. Conversely, the collection of seed samples allows for the preservation of what currently exists. 0 The tablet computer encapsulates the democratisation of knowledge, through ever-increasing access to data. 0 The moon ro cks represent the ambition to move beyond the world and the infinite possibilities of exploring and understanding our universe. 0The Cabinet is designed to inspire awe in the observer through the display of symbols of the technological and scientific progress that has led to a better understanding of our world and beyond.
